This does not surprise me

The LA Times often has great coverage of weight issues-- maybe because this is the land of the thin and the beautiful. One of their blogs, Booster Shots is something I read every day. Yesterday they talked about an article that will be coming out in the International Journal of Obesity comparing the outcomes of weightloss from diet and exercise vs surgery. What researchers found was that that the amount of weight loss was similar but that the surgery peeps had more fat in their diet, ate more fast food, worked out less and had higher levels of depression.

The higher levels of depression part surprises me. I wonder what the root of that is?

So this is just a guess but I have done some thinking about it. I've had lots of surgeries. Those in and of themselves I find depressing but for me medically necessary. So imagine having surgery for something that you have failed at time and time again, and not only that you are rearranging your innards so that you are no longer physically capable of getting the same enjoyment out of food. Dumping and vomiting are common for those who don't follow the rules of life with food after surgery. I would think that being forced into living with food in this new way would be ridiculously depressing, but that's just me.
